Overview

SimCity 3000 puts you in control of your own urban empire. Come along as we take you through the ABCs of being a SimCity 3000 mayor!

Playing SimCity 3000 is all about using the tools at your disposal as mayor -- like zoning, building power plants and roads, providing city services like police protection -- to attract Sims (simulated citizens) to move in and build houses, factories, office buildings and stores.

Key Features

Laying Down Roads

Your Sims will need to get around, so let's start by laying down some roads. As your city grows, you can also build highways, bridges, bus stops, trains and subways to reduce traffic. But that's not a problem -- yet!

Zoning Districts

Now it's time to do some zoning to define where your Sims can construct different kinds of buildings. The different colors you see correspond to the different kinds of zones -- green for Residential, blue for Commercial, yellow for Industrial.

Powering Your City

The next step is building a power plant -- without power, your city will never develop. Adjacent zones will conduct power automatically, but you'll need power lines to connect distant zones and buildings.

Watching the City Come Alive

Now let's start the simulator and watch our city come alive. As Sims move in, you'll see buildings constructed, as well as traffic on your streets and pedestrians on your sidewalks.

Managing Garbage

Soon after Sims move in, you'll be facing one of your first challenges -- garbage. Without a garbage system, Sims will start tossing trash out their windows, so avoid baby diaper mountains on our lawns by zoning a landfill. Best to find a spot reachable by roads, but far from our sensitive noses.

Essential Services & Landmarks

As your city grows, you'll build schools so your Sims are educated; police and fire stations to keep them safe; and recreation areas to keep them happy. Real-world landmarks like the Empire State Building, Alcatraz and Hagia Sofia give your city character. You'll build seaports and spaceports, manage your budget, and protect your Sims from tornadoes, earthquakes and UFO attacks.

Dynamic World & 3D Audio

Zoom in to see Sims going about their day. Zoom out for a bird's eye view of your domain. And with 3D sound created using Creative Labs' Environmental Audio, you'll feel like you're right there, among the chirping birds and laughing children. You can build all sorts of cities -- on islands, on rivers, on seacoasts; of dense downtowns or rustic suburbs. As you'll soon find out, in SimCity 3000, the city is yours.
